Along the confluences of rivers

The lower elevated part of the municipality of Varvažov called "U Mostu" has been named after the baroque bridge crossing the Skalice River. This river joins the Lomnice River about 3 km to the south-east from here in an area known to locals as "Říčky". (Howeever, you can find it on maps under the name of the nature sanctuary "V Obouch".) Not far from the confluence, you can view the top water of Orlická Reservoir. Later on, about three kilometres downstream, the Lomnice River joins the Otava River, which finally joins the Vltava under Zvíkov Castle to the north of here. The progressive merging of the rivers can be followed along marked tourist paths (the yellow and later on the red one, the so-called "Sedláček" path, named after the author of the monumental History of the Royal Regional Town of Písek nad Otavou).

The cruise takes you through a romantic rocky valley with several impressive vistas (e.g. Krkavčí Rock) all the way to a place with a beautiful vista over Zvíkov Castle (the natural landmark of "Kopaniny"). In this area, you can also visit the picturesque village of Zbonín (with a bit of luck you can experience some local social life, see "U Pasrně"). From there you can follow the road with little traffic or blue-marked path back to Varvažov, across the village square. You can make this longer trip more pleasant with a visit to Zvíkov Castle or the brewery in Zvíkovské Podhradí (just cross the Zvíkov bridge and turn left in the direction to the castle) or – just before the end of your trip – drop in to the U Hastrmana Pub on Varvažov’s village square.
