Upstream of the Lomnice River – Mirotice

Going the other way upstream of the Lomnice River, you set out for a slightly longer walk, which also includes the trip previously described. At first, get to Ostrovec, from where you can join the blue-marked path, going across the Vystrkov natural landmark and the Karlov Castle to Mirotice. This town mainly takes pride in its famous native, Mikoláš Aleš; the puppeteer, Matěj Kopecký, lived also here. In addition to the Mikoláš Aleš Memorial, Mirotice highlights also include a well-preserved Jewish cemetery founded as early as in 1681 (as one of the oldest cemeteries in south Bohemia). Mirotice is also a starting point of the picturesque Aleš path to Čimelice. The next stop after the Jewish cemetery is Budský dvůr, where Mikoláš Aleš used to go to visit Maryna Kailová, his lover and future wife. When you go along the path, you will encounter a number of nature and archaeological points of interest: near the path in the forest – near mounds from the Hallstatt period – there is a rocking stone and not far from it you can see the natural landmark Malý Kosatin a bog meadow rich in flora.

Just a bit further along the path, you will climb the highest hill in the area called Hrad with a well preserved and, reportedly, the best documented hill fort from the Hallstatt period (approximately from the first half of the 1st millennium B.C.). At the foot of Hrad Hill, there is the secluded U Nováka house with the horse range and meadows surrounded by forests. This place was the venue of the 19th century tale “Iron Cross” by Tereza Nováková (you can find this cross among four linden-trees planted noticeably close to each other). From there, the path goes across the typical local landscape to Rakovice and consequently along a pleasant old oak alley all the way to Čimelice Castle. As for the way back from Čimelice to Varvažov, just check the link called “Upstream of the Skalice River – Čimelice”. Just note that the trail route is not particularly well marked, so get yourself a tourist map for the trip. The path partially follows the yellow-marked tourist path from Mirotice to Čimelice, which may serve as an orientation point. However, the marked rout misses some of the sights and it is about 3 kilometres shorter than the nature trail.
