The Lomnice Meanders near Ostrovec

The walk from Varvažov downstream along the Skalice River to the confluence with the Lomnice River then upstream along this river to Ostrovec and then back to the starting point is somewhat shorter and particularly suitable for enthusiastic ornithologists and those interested in scenic wonders. Follow the yellow mark to the former Avia Hotel from where you will follow the red mark to the nearby river confluence (then follow the blue to Ostrovec and then the not very busy path to Varvažov). The river confluence is a point where a longer zone of the nature sanctuary called V Obouch begins (protecting the presence of the Eurasian otter, the black stork’s breeding site as well as endangered plants such as martagon lily etc.)

The riverbed of Lužiště with a number of ripples and later near Ostrovec also the meanders offers a beautiful spectacle in itself; with some luck you may see, for example, a kingfisher and numerous other species of birds. The entire river system in this territory – including the Otava and Vltava Rivers – is a part of the bird territory where mainly the biggest and smallest owls living in our country (the Eurasian eagle-owl and the Eurasian pygmy owl) are protected. The rocks near the dam probably serve as a breeding place of the osprey, one of the biggest raptors in the world.
